HSTAC Membership
Why Join the Hamilton Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Consortium?
HSTAC is a dedicated group of concerned apprenticeship training stakeholders interested in building a better future for our community by advancing the success of employers and skilled trades.
Our Vision is to foster world-class training practices that meet the demands for skilled trades in our community. Simply stated, to put process in place today that will provide sufficient highly qualified trades people in tomorrow's workplaces.
The Council meets at least three times each year to discuss training issues, which can include the promotion of skilled trades as a respected career/profession thereby increasing enrolment in apprenticeship programs, increasing apprenticeship completion rates, encouraging employer commitment to develop skilled trade programs and strengthening partnerships with other related organizations.
HSTAC is developing a managed approach to the apprenticeship process. It recognizes the need for a balance between the number of apprentices and the number of employer apprenticeship opportunities. By providing consortium sponsorship in seven red seal trades, apprentices are able to breach the barrier and find employment easier. HSTAC encourages effective mentorship through the apprenticeship process and stays connected with apprentices until they are fully employed.
Human resource development is one of the most difficult challenges faced by today's management. This includes having trained trades people available when you need them, as your skilled trades' people near retirement. Do you realize it requires 4 – 5 years to develop a skilled trade person? Have you considered where replacement trade people will come from? Are you aware of the college Coop Diploma Apprenticeship programs? Do new technologies challenge your present workforce? Do you have a plan to develop your future workforce? Could you use financial assistance to train your future trade's people? HSTAC can help your organization get started.
HSTAC can help by:
- Arranging a Community College Cooperative Education Rep to discuss student qualifications and availability for upcoming coop work term placements
- Providing direct assistance with start up and the administration of apprenticeship programs e.g. Contracts, forms, training schedules, monitoring
- Providing information on how to apply for tax credits and subsidies
- Providing mentoring skill development and support
